Fly fishing for Spring Salmon

Fly Fishing for Spring salmon can be a daunting task to many anglers. You normally have heavier water   conditions and some anglers would turn to using heavy spoons and spinners. But given the right tools and flies for the job it can be very successful indeed.A lot is really down to a number of factors such as water temperature, clarity of the water, speed of current etc etc.

Fly size, pattern and colour are dictated by this. You have to ask yourself these questions in order to get results.Study the water you are about to fish and get to know a particular pool.

First we deal with the speed of the current and choose a pattern of the right size that will fish at the right depth. We don't want to fish a small fly in a strong current as it will look out of place. So you have picked the size of the fly and the next step is colour.

Look at the water to see what colour it is.Is  it clear or peaty. Some anglers would say that fly colour is not important and other anglers would disagree.

If the water is coloured then use a bright coloured fly ie. Garry dog, Green highlander etc.If the water is clear then choose a pattern with less impacted ie.Munro killer, Stoats tail.

The next step is what depth should I be fishing.A large tube on a sinking line might sound great in a slow deep pool but when it gets down there it is not very 'life' like.

In a slow deep pool a smaller fly on a sinking line would probably be better. The large tube and sinking line would be more suited to a faster current.
